Palestine, TX – The woman who was hit and killed by a UPS truck Tuesday evening in Palestine has been identified as 52-year-old Elizabeth Paukstis, according to the police.
The deadly accident happened around 7:53 p.m. on February 17 on S. Loop 256 near Sycamore Street.
Police said Paukstis was attempting to cross the loop northbound when she was struck by a westbound UPS truck.
The UPS truck had a green light at the time of the accident.
Paukstis was taken to the hospital, where she later died. She was wearing dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. She was an attorney from Washington D.C., and was in East Texas assisting inmates at the TDCJ Tennessee Colony Unit, and was part of the Wrongful Conviction Project.
The UPS driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigators.
The police are investigating the accident.
